Destinations & pace

Choose a base. Leave room to enjoy it.

Start with the kind of days you want, rather than a list of places to tick off. A considered base can make the rest of your visit easier to shape.

Decide what matters most

Write down your two or three priorities: time by a lake, a mountain setting, city culture, dining or an occasion. Then decide how much time you want to spend moving between them. Our planning suggestion is to leave some unscheduled time around the experiences that matter most.

Compare settings, not just hotel names

Zürich combines an old-town setting with access to the lake. Explore its historic streets and lakeside setting on the official tourism page before deciding whether a city base suits your priorities.

Consider a lake-and-mountain setting

Lucerne combines a historic city with Lake Lucerne and views of the surrounding Alps. If that setting appeals to you, compare accommodation locations with the excursions you have in mind. A lakeside stay and a stay in the city centre can lead to different daily routines.

Treat every change of base as part of a day

Consider packing, checkout, the journey, luggage and check-in before adding another overnight stop. Compare actual door-to-door journeys, rather than only the time between stations. A hotel you love is most useful when it also suits your plans and the way you want to travel.

Plan the last connection

Zermatt is car-free: private vehicles can travel only as far as Täsch, with an onward train or authorised taxi connection. If you choose it as a base, discuss the final arrival and luggage arrangements with your accommodation rather than assuming a private car can reach the hotel.
